Defend 1776 – Battle Line: The Battle of Monmouth
June 28, 1778 – Monmouth County, New Jersey
The Battle of Monmouth, fought on June 28, 1778, was one of the longest and hottest battles of the Revolutionary War. As General George Washington’s Continental Army intercepted the retreating British forces under General Sir Henry Clinton, the sweltering New Jersey heat turned the battlefield into a furnace. Amidst the chaos, Washington rallied his troops after a faltering American start, personally riding into the fray to restore order and lead a fierce counterattack. The battle ended in a tactical draw—but it proved that the once-underdog Continental Army, now trained by Baron von Steuben, could fight toe-to-toe with the British. It was also here that the legend of Molly Pitcher was born, symbolizing the courage of women in the Revolution. Monmouth was a trial by fire—and from that fire emerged an army ready to defend 1776 with unshakable resolve.
